Bream Information

Bream, also known as Carp Bream, are a species of freshwater fish belonging to the Carp family. They are native to most of Europe and are a popular part of course fishing. Carp Bream are very similar to Silver Bream, although they are not the same fish.

Bream Weight and Size

Bream can grow up to a maximum length of 30 inches (75 centimeters) and reach a maximum weight of over 9 lb (4.1 kg). However the majority of Bream average around 15 inches (38 centimeters) in length, and 1 lb (0.5 kg) in weight.

Bream Habitats

Bream are bottom feeding fish, so are normally found at the bottom of rivers, although many live in lakes and ponds of all different sizes. In Ireland bream can be found in massive reservoirs in which they live and feed in huge schools. Bream like nutrient rich waters containing algae, muddy bottoms, and lots of plant life.

Bream Feeding Habits

Bream feed in schools and use their mouths to dig for larvae and grubs in the bottom of rivers and lakes. Bream also eat water plants and plankton, and when food is in short supply have the ability to filter feed using their gills.

Bream Likes and Dislikes

Bream prefer to live at the bottom of lakes and rivers, although at night they can be found closer to the shores. They like to live in large numbers as this helps to protect them from predators and other threats.
